Empty buildings tower above the pines. Barren halls long since overtaken by the wilds stand as constant reminders of what was lost, of the price the world had to pay. Each structure shares the same fate, sagging ceilings, barren beams, floors littered with broken objects, and growing plants. Each window is a gaping hole like a missing tooth. Great metal husks, their purpose long since forgotten, lay strewn across the landscape. Their hulking forms rust and decay as they lay entombed in the green of new growth. Snow melts into rivers that run between each of the mementos. Mists drift from the forest and swallow the ground. Permafrost lingers below the surface, born of the perpetual chill. Distant fires burn in seemingly empty structures as snowdrifts from the sky in lazy flurries. |
