The frost coats the pine needles like a dusting of silver more days than not. In the shadow of the long slumbering sawmill, the oft-forgotten town survives. Though their numbers have dwindled, those who remain carve out their existence amongst the conifers. The cabin logs are polished smooth, the marks of each storm they have weathered. Smoke fills the air and clings as close as the cold as fires burn in hearths day and night. Stacks of firewood outnumber residents. Among distant trees, lights glow in the windows of isolated homes. Their only neighbors: ancient stumps, whose forms shelter new growth. On clear nights the sky glitters with stars. Their light is so bright it makes the snow below shimmer. |
