There was a soft breeze in the night air, soft and sweet as little spots of light appeared with a flutter of insect wings. It was the kind of night that enchanted Spindle and reminded him of the wonderful world of bugs. They were oddly beautiful creatures, lost in a tiny world that seemed otherworldly compared to the kebanzu world. They could just exist in their odd little ways and continue on in their own little journeys.

Sometimes it was lonely being an entomologist, especially when other kebanzu did not understand why insects made him so happy or why he wanted to study everything there could possibly be about them. Yet when he was here, he felt welcomed by the fireflies doing their lazy slow dances throughout the dark sky.

With a warm mason jar, he leaped forward and gently encouraged a firefly inside. He planned to take this beauty and study them further at his lab. After that, he would be more than happy to set them free again. But only when he was certain they were a healthy population and that they had not contracted any disease. Maybe he could even take a picture to hang on his wall, he had an entire assortment of insect pictures up in his living room. Although he wasn’t a fan of pinning bugs with needles to keep them unless he found them after they already passed. A living insect should be allowed to live their entire life without being bothered by him.

Spindle paused when he saw another wave of fireflies float up towards the sky and laughed happily to himself. He had no idea the population would be so massive this time of year and he felt positively swimming in all of these glowing insects. Although he wouldn’t try to catch any more tonight, after all, if he had too many subjects, he would never be able to study them all before he wanted to go back into the field for other bugs. So, for tonight, he would enjoy their presence for a little while longer and then go back to the lab for more results.

He might even call up his coworker and see if they wanted to spend some more time in the lab. After all, it had been some time since they last got the chance to view specimens of fireflies, and wouldn’t that make for a great discussion between the pair of them?

He smiled to himself and started to pack his bag, there would be plenty of time to enjoy more insects later. He would have to drop off this little friend at his lab before he went home and he knew if he stayed any longer, he might end up falling asleep at the lab again. Which he honestly didn’t mind, but the couch they had wasn’t made for sleeping on and he’s sure his coworker would scold him.

He waved goodbye to the fireflies and turned away. He couldn’t wait to come back later for more insects, it sounded fun.
