There was nothing that Lancelot liked more than to get dressed up in his armor and tour the renaissance fair with his dear friend Penelope. She was after all the princess of the fair and he was her loyal bodyguard. It was a fun role to play, and the pair always seemed to have fun with it.
“Penelope?”
She hummed in response, waiting for Lancelot’s question.
“Do you think this fair was our best yet?” Lancelot smiled brightly, looking off to the side when he saw a hoard of children giggling and playing off to the side. This was what the fair was meant to be, a place of fun.
Penelope nodded, “I think so, you should have seen all the children complimenting your squire. He was even redder than he normally is.” She covered her mouth, trying not to laugh too loudly.
Lancelot shook his head, “Better not tell Bodhi that, you know how he is. A cute kid, but he gets embarrassed so easily.” Which made the little ren even more darling, but he didn’t dare upset his squire or he might go running off to complain to his mother again. Lancelot still had a bruise from that slap to the back of the head from Red Lady.
Penelope snorted, “Well that’s true and I’m so certain you’re not saying that because Red Lady scared you last time?”
“In my defense, rens slap pretty hard and besides, it was only a little teasing, nothing too serious.”
“I’m sorry our little Bodhi disagreed. Honestly, you’ve been spending too much time around that boyfriend of yours.”
Lancelot blushed, looking around quickly, “He is not my boyfriend, don’t joke about that.”
Penelope looked surprised, “What really? You both seem so close and if you don’t mind me saying it seems like you both are-“
But she could finish, Lancelot pulled her along to a food vendor. “Come on, enough of that. A princess needs to eat before our next performance. Remind it’s going to be a big one, with the rival ren knight that plans to steal you away for all of the fair’s gold.”
Penelope rolled her eyes playfully, “Oh fine, I’ll pretend you’re not trying to avoid the topic and order the biggest burger I can. That last performance really took it out of me, and I think I’m going to sleep for the next hour.”
Lancelot nodded, “Well that’s fair, it was a difficult scene, and the stage was a little wobbly. I’ll make sure to get Goliath to look at it when the fair dies down after our last show.”
“Maybe in the morning? He performed all day with us, and I just know Red Lady will say we’re overworking her husband… again.”
“Smart idea.”
The pair laughed again as they grabbed food and continued to walk the fair. Lancelot might do this every year for Spring, but it was always his favorite time. Sure, they ran the fair all year, but the Spring fair was always the biggest. Spring was just that kind of season.
